Hong Kong’s premier shoegaze and indie pop outfit, Lucid Express, is hitting American shores once again, bringing their lush, shimmering sound to 13 cities across the U.S. this April. Kicking off in Seattle and concluding at Brooklyn’s Slide Away Shoegaze Festival, the tour promises an immersive journey through hazy vocals, dreamy guitars, and vibrant sonic landscapes.
Originally formed in 2014 under the name Thud, the band discovered shoegaze after encountering My Bloody Valentine’s Loveless and finding inspiration from artists like Slowdive, DIIV, Whirr, and Yuck. Early on, they honed their craft through covers and EP releases before reinventing themselves as Lucid Express in 2021, dropping a stunning self-titled debut album featuring breakout singles “North Action” and “Hotel 65.”
According to vocalist and synth player Kim, the group’s signature sound comes from a rich blend of each member’s personal influences. Their goal? To treat vocals as another instrument, blending them deep into their cascading waves of reverb and distortion rather than setting them apart. “We want to blend the vocals with the instruments and put them in a more background position,” Kim shared in a post-release interview.
Despite the bustling, neon-drenched chaos of their home city, Lucid Express has carved out a sound that’s ethereal, vibrant, and hypnotic — a whirling collision of shoegaze textures and indie pop sparkle. Their music captures fleeting moments of light, emotion, and noise, creating a dreamlike atmosphere that feels both intimate and expansive.
As they round out their U.S. tour, Lucid Express is teasing the release of a brand new album. This forthcoming project promises an even dreamier evolution of their sound, steering gently away from traditional shoegaze toward a more acoustic, introspective aesthetic.
For fans of noise pop, shoegaze, and dreamy indie rock, Lucid Express’s tour is not to be missed — a rare opportunity to witness one of Hong Kong’s finest bands live in full, luminous bloom.
