In a new interview with Pitchfork, My Bloody Valentine frontman Kevin Shields confirmed that the band has been working on new music, with plans to release a new album sometime in 2018. This will mark their first release since the critically acclaimed 2013 comeback album m b v (m.b.v. records).
Shields explained that the project originally started as an EP but naturally expanded:
“One hundred percent. Basically, the record started off as an EP, and I realized it has to be, like, a mini-album, because it’s going to be at least 40 minutes long. So it’s going to be an album, but I don’t really know how many tracks it’s going to be. It’ll probably be seven or eight, by the looks of it.”
He also mentioned that live shows will accompany the release:
“We’re going to play live again, so that’s always a really good way to guarantee that we’ll get the record done.”
My Bloody Valentine is best known for their groundbreaking 1991 album Loveless (Creation Records), a genre-defining masterpiece in shoegaze and avant-garde heavy music. Their legendary live performances are renowned for their extreme volume and intensity, standing among the loudest in music history.
